When in doubt, take a small bite of the grape first to see if it’s sweet. Don’t risk sticking the whole sour grape in at once. Especially if it’s a big one.

Apples, which are so good at this time of year, so great as a snack themselves (Who doesn’t remember that Ramona Quimby book where she got in trouble for eating the first crunchy bite of every apple they picked at the orchard so her mother had to make the rest into applesauce?), so great on sandwiches, as juice, in salads. Heck, apples make waldorf salad, which is just shy of Godhood, am I right or am I right?

But I may have lied; this post is about more than apples. It’s also about fall, which is officially in session starting tomorrow, though the weather has been hinting at the turn for a few weeks. It’s about changing leaves (which my camp director pointed out the beginning of this change back in early August. I was astounded to see a few orange leaves showing up every day.) and apple orchards and fall weddings (which I want want want) and the return of the coveted pumpkin flavored lattes and cookies and deodorants and anything else you could possibly scent. Tons of babies are born in the fall. My favorite Mormon Mommy blogger, Kathryn, just had her baby girl. My best friend growing up’s sister just had her baby girl, Kayden.

These are things I love, you see; I love weddings and babies and those babies’ names and baking with pumpkin, camping, wearing jackets and scarves and long sleeves and making applesauce with apples and engagements and wedding planning and talking about colors and fall accents and I just adore the fall. So, I suppose it’s fitting that I am beginning this blog the time of year I love the most: when everything dies. Simply and utterly ironic, isn’t it? I don’t really care.

Something I don’t like, just for the record: kitsch. I don’t do Kitsch. I like things to have a purpose, and I find that most kitsch objects fail to do the one job they were made to do: look good. You will not see any Coca-Cola polar bears or collections on this blog (except the unfortunate penguin fiasco of 2006, to be described at a later date). And this goes for my blogging as well. You won’t get posts that say, “This is a funny turtle animation I found on the internet, look at how he dances!” My blogs will serve a purpose. They will inform you. Maybe teach you something, or maybe they’ll just recap my exciting life. Maybe I’ll delve into my wealth of wisdom that is twenty-one years deep and find some revelation that you have never had before. This is unlikely, I will admit.

But I’ll be back to write more. So this was my introduction. Have an apple.
